ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The three day intensive program is designed to equip the teams with enough knowledge so that they are well-equipped to embark on the commercialization journey. The program intends to enable the translation of technology to businesses by bringing together inventors and people with complementary skills and by providing them the necessary know-how.

Conceived to be extremely hands-on, the program will give participants a chance to be part of a team that commercializes a technology, gain experience in crossdisciplinary collaboration, brain-storming and ad-hoc leadership and decision making under severe time constraints.


WHO CAN APPLY?




Any professional, researcher, or faculty with technology which is patented (published or granted), other professionals from diverse backgrounds motivated towards technology commercialization and entrepreneurship.


ABOUT IIT GANDHINAGAR




Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is a young Institute that places significant emphasis on innovation, entrepreneurship and community engagement. Our undergraduate program includes several innovative elements, such as an emphasis on the liberal arts, project oriented learning, compulsory courses in design and the life sciences, diversity and globalization. The students are exposed to the importance of community engagement from the beginning as part of their 5-week Foundation Program. The Institute organizes several hands-on design competitions and incorporates several initiatives within its curriculum to cultivate innovation and entrepreneurship skills (or aptitude) among students. IP and Entrepreneurship@ IITGN




IIT Gandhinagar’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship programs aim to create high growth technology companies that generate commercial and social impact. Towards this objective, the Institute has integrated existing programs and developed new programs that cater to different goals of raising awareness, building capacity and establishing infrastructure for commercialization and sustained industry interaction.

To inculcate entrepreneurial and IP related skills to students, the Institute introduced several courses, organizes seminars and workshops which are taught by experienced professionals from India and abroad. Students also receive exposure to international entrepreneurship ecosystems through a variety of programs.

IIT Gandhinagar incubation center is currently incubating companies started by its alumni and is open to incubating companies from outside. Its incubation facilities in the upcoming new campus include wet and dry labs and rapid prototyping infrastructure (hardware and software) to support high technology startups. Apart from space and development infrastructure, the incubation center also provides mentoring, connectivity to professionals investors, and business networks, and limited financing.

Summary


Day 1



This day will focus on team formation. Activities on this day include (1) icebreakers (2) technology bazaar, to enable match-making and team formation (3) team activities to help team members to get to know each other, to get all the team members on the same page w.r.t to technology, markets and commercialization goals.

Day 2



The second day will include seminars on various topics to give the teams necessary tools to build an effective business plan around the technology.

Day 3



On day 3, each team will be working with an assigned mentor to work on their business plans. At the end of the day 3, there will be a pitching session in front of a panel of VC’s , investors and accomplished entrepreneurs.


Registration

Applications for the program will be accepted via webportal (tech2impact.iitgn.ac.in) that will enable interaction and evaluation. Applicants will join the program through the portal as a technologist with a patented IP or as professional with complementary skills and provide sufficient information in prescribed forms.

Once the deadline for registration is past, participants will have an opportunity to interact with each other online, to create their personal shortlist of teams they want to be part of. A short listed number of technologies will be created based on these individual selections and evaluation by an independent evaluation by a panel of judges. Short listed candidates will be invited for a three day intensive program at IIT Gandhinagar.



PROGRAM MENTORS

  • Premnath Venugopalan

    Dr V Premnath is currently the Head, NCL Innovations – the group within National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) charged with the responsibility of championing the cause of technology innovation within NCL. Dr Premnath also provides leadership for the Intellectual Property Group at NCL – one of India’s leading IP management groups based out of research institutions. Dr Premnath is also the Director of the Venture Center – a technology business incubator on NCL campus. Dr Premnath is also a Scientist, Polymer Science & Engineering Division at NCL with an interest in technology development for biomedical products.

    Dr Premnath has helped found and be the first Director of Venture Center, CSIR-Tech (a technology commercialization company), Orthocrafts Innovations (degradable synthetic polymer based biomed products start-up) and BiolMed Innovations (silk based biomaterials start-up).

    Dr. V. Premnath holds a B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He has also been a Chevening Technology Enterprise Fellow with the Centre for Scientific Enterprises, London Business School and Cambridge University, UK. He brings with him considerable experience in technology development and commercialization (two successfully commercialized families of biomedical products), incubation and innovation management, working with start-up companies (in Cambridge-UK and India) and engaging with large corporations on research and consulting projects as project leader.

  • Guhesh Ramanathan

    Guhesh is the co-Founder and CEO of Excubator.org, an organization that assistsentrepreneurs build world-class global businesses. He mentors anywhere between 15 to 50 ventures every month. His area of specialisation are product positioning and strategy, building business models, creating financially viable plans and managing operational risk. He brings with him strong solution-oriented, lateral-thinking and directional leadership skills.

    Guhesh previously worked with large IT companies before turning entrepreneur himself in 1994 with a string of successful ventures. He serves on the board of many global start-up organizations as a Strategy Advisor.

    An Indian national, he is an Electrical Engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology(Varanasi) and holds an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (Bangalore). He is an in-demand speaker for many events, such as CEO Knowledge Forums and NASSCOM product summits. Guhesh is a certified Executive Coach.

    Guhesh is also an outdoor enthusiast. He is a certified Advanced Open Water Diver by PADI Australia with hundreds of dives. He enjoys underwater photography, and has published a book on management wisdom related to diving called ‘The Scuba Sutras: Ten Business Lessons from Under the Sea.

  • Srikanth Sundararajan

    Dr. Srikanth Sundararajan has 25+ years of international experience in the software product and services space. He has worked at HP, Informix, and was part of the executive leadership team at HCL, the world wide CTO at Cognizant and the COO at Persistent. He had also successfully founded his own start up, Pretzel Logic Software Inc., which was subsumed into BEA, now Oracle.

    He is also a visiting faculty of computer science at IIT Bhubaneswar and has taught at several US universities. He also serves on national committees on technical education, an initiative of MHRD, India.

    Currently he is a Venture Partner with Helion Advisors, an India focused fund to help technology focused start-ups looking to go global from India.

    He holds a B Tech degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and a MS/PhD in Computer and Information Sciences from University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign. He has several publications and is the holder of patents, jointly with HP and BEA.

  • Sushanto Mitra

    Mr. Shushanto Mitra, Founder & CEO at Lead Angels

    Mr. Mitra is Founder & CEO at Lead Angels Network, a seed stage angel network and the first group focused on alumni of pedigree educational institutions. Within a short span of time the network now operates in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and New Delhi. His prior assignments included Director of Hyderabad Angels until June 2013, Chief Executive Officer , Society for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, IIT Bombay and Director of Techcap India a boutique investment bank focused on early stage companies. His earlier stints also included companies like PriceWaterHouse Coopers, HCL Insys and Softek. He regularly speaks and writes about early stage companies at industry forums and media. He has conducted a number of mentoring programs for entrepreneurs at CII, TIE, NASSCOM and other industry events connected with startups. He has also been a judge for events including EDGE, Eureka and Proto. in.

  • Gouraj Yadav

    Gouraj enjoys being associated with the intellectual property industry for close to a decade now. He has successfully engaged Hourglass Research as on outside counsel for numerous hi-tech clients. He has been instrumental in delivering quality results in some of the niche areas of Electronics including semiconductors, evolving communication standards (3GPP/LTE), cloud computing, and automotive electronics, with a special focus on patent drafting & prosecution and technology licensing. He also enjoys building innovative techniques to address R&D challenges of technology companies using patent analytics. Gouraj is associated with and contributes to global IP organizations including WIPO, AIPLA, INTA, and EPO. Prior to co-founding Hourglass Research, Gouraj managed operations in an IP startup that was successfully sold to Netscribes and prior to that, he was a project manager at Evalueserve where he successfully led various patent drafting teams. Gouraj is an Electrical and Electronics Engineer from BITS, Pilani.

  • Madhu Mehta

    Dr. Madhukumar Mehta is a technocrat who turned to being a coach for pursuit of next gen entrepreneurship. In the past he has founded three companies. First was a consulting firm to design digital electronics based products (notably calculators). This was followed by Digital Innovations, which designed and marketed computers for diverse applications. The third venture - Anjaleem, created attended PCO and shaped the birth of STD PCO markets in India. Dr. Mehta has mentored many startups and is also involved with many industry, non-profits, university bodies to promote technology and entrepreneurship.
    Currently he is the Chief Mentor at icreate.

  • Hiran Vedam

    Hiran is an entrepreneur with more than 15 years of entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship experience. She is currently the Advisor for IP & Entrepreneurship at IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) where she started the innovation and entrepreneurship program from scratch in a 6 year old educational institution. Since joining the Institute in November 2013, she has increased the number of startups by students from two to six and number of registered IPs filed by faculty from zero to three. She is instrumental in defining the Institute's IP and incubation policy and increasing Institute's engagement with Indian industry. Under her leadership, the Institute got approval to setup a Technology Business Incubator funded by India's Department of Science Technology - a first for such a young academic Institute in India.

    Prior to joining IIT Gandhinagar, she was the founder of ArdeJa Pte.Ltd. (previously known as NanoConsulting Pte. Ltd.) in Singapore. She was also the managing director of Nanoholdings Asia Pte.   • Vidya Laxman

    Vidya Laxman is IT Director at Tesco Hindustan Service Centre (HSC) and is also part of the Technology Management Group. In her 18+ years of international career, she has worked in technology and market facing roles with both startups and global players. Her geographical diverse and rich experiences encompass incubating and growing global technology businesses and driving organizational change.

    Prior to Tesco HSC, Vidya spent nearly 3 years as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Thoughtworks Studios division, where she managed the global operations that included development, finance, human resources, public policy, and communications. She also supported marketing, and sales efforts in the local market. Earlier, she worked in companies like Sunguard, Wachovia Bank and Fidelity.

    Vidya holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer engineering from RVCE, Bangalore. She is very active in different bodies like National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), American Chambers of Commerce, etc. She is currently the co-Chair for Anita Borg Institute (GraceHopper) – Women in technology. She is passionate about social causes and is actively engaged in her local community. Her other interests include long distance running, travel, and spending time with family.

  • Priyanka Chopra

    Priyanka heads Portfolio operations at the Center for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) at IIM Ahmedabad. In her current role she provides strategic, advisory and fundraising support to the 90+ companies in the CIIE portfolio.

    Prior to CIIE, Priyanka spent over 3 years at Sarvajal, a social enterprise focused on increasing access to pure drinking water through entrepreneurship - where she oversaw Finance, Technology and Operations. Before moving to India in 2010, Priyanka was a senior consultant with IBM’s Internal Strategy Group (New York) working with senior IBM executives on operational and growth challenges confronting the firm. Priyanka has also worked in a variety of design, engineering and business development roles with Sun Microsystems (California) from 2000-06.   • Vikram Parmar

    Dr Vikram Singh Parmar is a CEO of the National Design Business Incubator, Ahmedabad (NDBI), and an Associate Senior Designer in the Product Design department at the National Institute of Design www.nid.edu (NID). Vikram has a decade of experience in teaching, researching and consulting in the European and South Asian Sector in the area of developing products and services for emerging markets. Particularly in the area of “Design for behavior change” in the domain of healthcare and waste management. He received his PhD in Industrial Design Engineering from the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands on “Design Framework for Developing ICT Products and Services for Rural Development”. He did his industrial design from IIT Bombay, India.

    His has been conducting research in the domain of Venture Design and entrepreneurship, design for reducing information poverty, medical devices for affordable health, and shaping health behavior for social change. He has published in the area of persuasive computing, behavioral change in rural healthcare, capacity development and ICT4d.

  • Raghunandan Rajamani

    Dr. Raghunandan Rajamani graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Mysore followed by M.Tech in IIT Madras and then Doctorate from IIT Delhi. His experience of 25+ years began in academics and subsequently for the past 15+ years in Entrepreneurship Development and Technology Business Incubation.

    He is currently the Executive Director of the Indian STEPs and Business Incubators Association (ISBA) an Association of which he was a founder Secretary and later also Vice President. He has been a member of high level expert committee of the Technology Development Board, Govt. of India, Member of the Committee on Service Tax Exemption and is a jury member of the Asian Association of Business Incubators Awards.

    He was instrumental in establishing the JSSATE – Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park at Noida which he managed for more than a decade and this was the first Incubator to be setup under the umbrella of the Dept. Of Scinece & Technology, Govt. Of India (DST) in the year 2001. He was also one of the principal architects and Director (Operations) in Global Incubation Services, DST’s first IT Incubator at Bangalore. The core focus areas of his entrepreneurship activity is in IT and Manufacturing sectors. Mentored over 50 startup companies in both Incubators and managed the SEED funding initiatives.

    He has a rich experience in working with several agencies and governments such as the Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Technology Development Board of Government of India, the Ministry of Education & Research, Government of France, United Nations Development Programme, European Union to name a few.





FAQ's

What is the objective of the Program?

The objective of the program bring together inventors who have developed some technology and entrepreneurs from engineering, design, business and management backgrounds with complementary skills to form teams that will work towards creating commercial or social impact from the technology. The aim of the program is to encourage teams to develop a viable business around a technology, to evaluate its potential success in the market, and to identify critical issues to resolve to make the venture successful.

Who can participate?

Researchers or independent inventors with a technology (with intellectual property is registered) with a passion and drive to create impact from the technology.

Entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds with a motivation and interest to create impact from technology.

What is registration procedure?

All the interested participants have to register for the program by filling the registration form online (no hard copies). Registration can be done under two categories (1) Technologist for researchers or independent inventors with a technology and (2) Entrepreneur from diverse background with motivation and interest to create impact from technology.

Is there any fee for registration?

No, there is no fee for registration.

Short listed candidates will be invited to participate in the event from July 24-26, 2015. These candidates will be provided boarding and lodging to the participants at IIT Gandhinagar. However participants have to make their own travel arrangements to get to and from the campus.

I have a great idea which I feel can solve lot of the problems of the country, can I apply for the program?

Unfortunately, at Tech2Impact we encourage technology which have already been developed up to certain advance stage and can be taken up for commercialization. This event is not open for participants with just an idea. For idea stage technology there are other programs, hope you will find one.

How are candidates shortlisted?

All the participants who register for the program (under any category) will be able to interact with each other online to create their personal shortlist of participants they want work with. This

can be done as part of “Engage” section on the website. The match between the participants, size of the team (no more than 3-4 per team with at least one Technologist and one Entrepeneur) and the quality of the technology will be primary components in the participants being shortlisted. Decisions of the organizers regarding short listed candidates are final and no enquiries regarding these decisions are entertained.

When do I have to decide on my actual team?

You can have a preliminary set of team members before you arrive at the event and make your final choices on the first day of the event (July 24th).

Will the teams participating at Tech2Impact be automatically incubated at IIT Gandhinagar Incubation Center (IIC)?

IIT Gandhinagar Incubation Center will provide any mentoring and connectivity the teams need to take their ideas forward. Their admission into the formal incubation program at IIC will be subject to the teams meeting its entry criteria which the teams can discuss offline with the incubation staff.

What are the services IIC offers to its incubatees?

IIC will provide its incubatees working space, access to IITGN labs and expertise, mentoring, connectivity to its networks and its service providers.

Can the team members be from different places?

Of course, however they should be willing to work as team.

Can I submit more than one technology?

You can submit only one technology from your registered ID, if you have multiple technologies please submit the best which you feel have maximum commercialization potential.

I am currently employed full time. Can I apply?

It is up to you to decide. However, please note that entrepreneurship is not a part-time job or a hobby and this might impact your ability to create a successful venture.

I am afraid someone will steal my invention if I disclose it. Will you keep my invention confidential?

Participants will be responsible to protect any confidential information through appropriate means. The organizers of Tech2Impact will not be responsible for any losses incurred by the participants due to the disclosures made by them online.

Will there be provision of computers/ wifi at the venue?

The venue will have WiFi access, projection equipment and printers. However, participants have to get their own laptops and any other equipment they need.
